Head's Statement Head - Brian Walker

Good schools have a unity of purpose and an underlying philosophy that every pupil can do well. Outstanding schools have a burning desire to get the best possible deal for children in every respect. They are places where the culture of achievement runs deep. Through sheer hard work and determination West Park has become the school it has always wanted to be.

One of my predecessors, Gerald Williams, was described by HMI in 1930 as follows:

"The present Headmaster took charge in September 1929. He is a man of infinite energy and has already spread his spirit over the school. The whole place is wide awake and humming with industry and energy. By sheer force of character he has carried along with him the whole of his staff, as well as the children. Indeed the chief characteristic of the school is the fearless courage with which both teachers and children attack the work.

In fact the school has a brilliant future".

Staff and pupils will recognise much in this extract! Don't you just love the phrase 'fearless courage'!

Over 80 years on, West Park, is very much that 'brilliant future'.

Standards at West Park represent achievement of the highest order and place the school among the very best in the country. Without a first-rate teaching and associate staff, supportive parents, hard-working pupils and enlightened governance this would not be possible.

Our Pupils

Our pupils experience a civilised, challenging, vibrant and enjoyable education. They are involved in a broad range of sporting, cultural and artistic pursuits. They are thoughtful, considerate and demanding of themselves and us. West Park leavers display the achievement, confidence and responsibility that will help them go far. They are people who will be able to stand on their own two feet and take their place in society as responsible adults; net contributors to the common good, givers rather than takers.

Our Staff

We have a shared ethos which keeps us on track and constantly moving forward. Once appointed to this school teachers and associate staff quickly become part of a particular culture and find themselves contributing strongly to it. We have strength in depth built on secure and lasting foundations. My West Park colleagues now have extensive experience and expertise in securing outstanding pupil progress. A core value for subject leaders is responsibility for individual pupil progress. We never leave anything undone that possibly can be done, to secure higher achievement for all our pupils. We have non-negotiables. We do the simple things very well, day in, day out with high expectations in teacher and pupil performance. There are no comfort zones, there is no downtime, everyone is a reflective, accountable, active participant in school improvement. This is very demanding of staff and pupils but they are energised by the clarity of expectation.

We absolutely believe that given the right conditions any child can do well.
